Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) consists of a surgical correction of the external shape of the nose. Via surgery the size of the nose is altered, the shape of the bridge, the nostrils and the nasal tip are being adjusted. Respiratory obstruction can also be corrected in addition to a nose job, because shape and function are directly related.
For most of the rhinoplasties, an endonasal approach is used, i.e. the incisions are inside the nose, so there are no visible external scars. If necessary, excess body tissue such as bone or cartilage of a nose hump can be removed, or destroyed or missing tissue can be replaced with tissue transplantation.
In some cases, an open rhinoplasty is necessary for better access to the corresponding tissue. In this case, a tiny external scar at the junction of the upper lip to the nose bridge will remain.
A nose job, depending on the complexity of the procedure, is usually performed under general anesthesia and occasionally under local anesthesia or light sedation. Through an incision in the columella, the skin from the bone / cartilage skeleton of the nose is lifted and then shaped.
A too long nose can be shortened, a new nose tip will be modeled and a with a hump nose the excess cartilage and bones will be removed. Corrections to the tip of the nose can be corrected by the nasal septum cartilage through grafts. Unevenness can be compensated by the body's own filler material. With a crooked nose deformity, usually the cartilage and bone structure will be removed and the nose will then be brought into an aesthetic shape.
After surgery, the incisions are sutured, tamponades inserted into the nostrils. A band aid and sometimes a nasal splint will be applied to prevent bruising.
After the surgery
The tamponades are removed after 1-2 days. The splint and sutures are removed after about 7 days. In the first few days after the surgery you should rest and cool your face. Sleeping on the side needs to be avoided for 4-6 weeks, lie only on your back with your head elevated. Exercise or any strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 weeks.
The small bruises usually disappear after 1-2 weeks. Small swellings may persist for several months and can be reduced through massage. The end result is to be assessed after six months.
